Samuel Rose elected as Bishop of E. NFLD & Labrador

(Staff) ARCHDEACON Samuel Vincent Rose has been elected as the sixth bishop of Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador. The electoral synod was held online on Nov. 28th and Rose, who was one of four candidates, won on the fourth ballot. No date has been set yet for his consecration.

His predecessor, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Geoffrey Peddle, had served for six years and was set to retire at the end of December. Tragically he died in office on Oct. 8th. Rose had been appointed to act as the Diocesan Administrator until a new bishop was elected.

Rose was born and baptized on Bell Island in 1975. “I have spent my entire life in the Anglican Church which has blessed me with my family and many friendships.” His wife Jill is a teacher and they have two teenaged children.

He received his B.A. from Memorial University and his Masters of Divinity from Queen’s College, both in St John’s. Rose was ordained a priest in 2001 and has served in parishes in Labrador and Newfoundland.

For eight years he was Editor of Anglican Life, a paper that serves all three Newfoundland dioceses. He said that doing so opened his eyes to “all the incredible ways Anglicans across our Province are serving God.”

The diocese is located on the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland and stretches across most of Labrador. It has 37 parishes and over 30,000 members.   TAP
