(Staff) On March 3rd the Rev. Canon Susan Bell was elected as the Bishop of Niagara on the fifth vote. Bell, 51, was born and raised in Hamilton. Ordained in Toronto in 1997, she is currently the canon missioner for the Diocese of Toronto, an honorary assistant at St. James Cathedral, and an associate priest at the parish of St. Martin-in-the-Fields.

Her consecration is tentatively planned for May 5th at Christ’s Church Cathedral in Hamilton and she is expected to assume responsibilities as the diocesan bishop on June 1. She succeeds Michael Bird who served as bishop for the past decade. At General Synod 2016, both Bird and Bell voted to change the Marriage Canon to allow same-sex marriage.

Besides Hamilton and Niagara Falls, the Diocese includes the cities of Burlington, Guelph, Oakville and St Catharines as well as numerous smaller communities.   TAP
